We are participating in the exploration of various methods and opportunities to apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) in On-Board systems for Spacecraft (satellites, on-board equipment, spacecraft, among others).
This activity is headed by the Software Technology Section (TEC-SWT) of the European Space Agency (ESA), which has as one of its core competences, the development of new technologies which can be applied in space sector projects, strengthening industrial competitiveness and that of European entities through the implementation of funding and intellectual support programmes.
Through the issuance of invitations to tender in order to participate in various tenders managed by ESA, the company suitable to carry out the undertaking of the project is identified and selected. This action is undertaken through the areas of interest for the AI on-board implementation within the agency, such as for example, anomaly detection, and autonomy enhancement.
The activities of the TEC-SWT are implemented through technology and innovation programmes such as the General Support Technology Programme (GSTP) and the Technology Development Element programme (TDE).
The GSTP is a space where participating states and industry come together, working together to convert promising engineering concepts into a wide range of usable products. The activities of the GSTP encompass all ESA domains as well as generic technologies, with the exception of telecommunications, which has its own programme.
Moreover, the TDE is a mechanism to ensure the long-term availability of new technologies, helping to "prepare the European economy for the future". It is the only ESA technology programme which endorses all fields of the ESA activity across the entire spectrum of technical disciplines, providing the technological core for most future developments.
